- In 1804, the ornithologist Alexander Wilson and two companions walking in a wood near the Susquehanna River, come upon a large rattlesnake which one of them prepares to shoot. Wilson, left, stops him and they continue their tour to Niagara Falls, a journey which Wilson later commemorates in his poem 'The Foresters'. Illustration by Andrew Lawson (1773-1846)
