Augustus Le Plongeon (1825-1908) and his wife Alice Dixon (1851-1910) extensively excavated and documented the Mayan ruins at Chitchen Itza on the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, between 1873 and 1885. In this illustration are shown their discoveries of a colossal statue of Chaac Mol which Le Plongeon claimed was a depiction of a former ruler of Chichen Itza, a statue of a tiger with a human head and bas-reliefs from the tomb of the King Chaac Mol.
