Image description

This wall relief was originally found within the tomb of the Priest of the Pyramid of Niussere, Kaemrehu, at Saqqara. It is one of the masterpieces of 5th Dynasty art, and one of the most beautiful Old Kingdom reliefs showing daily life. One scene, at the top left, shows a group of donkeys accompanied by three men, while to the right, farmers perform their daily work. In the second register, on the left, there is a scene of the harvest depicting workmen recording what is being placed in vessels; one man is even counting using his fingers.Further to the right, there is a judgement scene: two men are being punished for tax offences, while a series of scribes record the events of the trial. The third register shows beer being made. Here the hieroglyphics describe the Egyptians talking about their work; further to the right, there is a scene of bread making in which one of the women tells the other to grind the grain carefully - she responds thatshe is doing the best she can. The final register shows scenes of different industries, such as carpenters at work, goldsmiths, and sculptors carving statues. cairo egyptian museum-detail of scenes from the Tomb of Kaemrehu-CG 1534; CEM 26 08 09 003-painted limestone; H. 97cm; 5th Dynasty, Old Kingdom; Saqqara; Ground Floor, Hall 41
