William Hyde Wollaston, English chemist and metallurgist, c 1810s. Engraving of William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828) by John Jackson, after a painting by William Skelton. Wollaston was the pioneer of the fabrication of platinum and also discovered palladium and rhodium. He was the first to produce ductile and malleable platinum on a commercial scale, and improved various scientific apparatus including the microscope and sextant. ©SSPL/Science Museum
