Image description

Sir John Wolfe Barry, English civil engineer, late 19th century. Oil painting of John Wolfe Barry (1836-1918), the youngest son of the architect Sir Charles Barry. He gained experience in all areas of building construction at the works of Messrs Lucas Brothers of Lowestoft, served an apprenticeship with John Harkshaw and was the resident engineer on the Charing Cross and Cannon Street railways during their construction. In 1868 he was elected a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and was requested in 1885 to act as an engineer and architect of Tower Bridge. Barry and Horace Jones were responsible for the design of the bridge, built between 1881 and 1894. Barry was also the engineer of Barry Docks, Glamorgan. ©SSPL/Science Museum
