Dunelm House is Durham University's student union, designed by the Architects Co-Partnership with Ove Arup and completed in 1966. The building has exposed concrete throughout and an irregular facade. In the background, on the far side of the River Wear, is Durham Cathedral, originally a Benedictine Priory, and re-founded as a secular cathedral in 1541. The main body is 1093-1130, and was begun by Bishop William of St. Calais. The east end of the cathedral consists of an east transept, which has nine bays, with single bays divided by buttresses. At each corner there are polygonal towers with short spires, and in the centre of the transept is a large roundel window. The crossing tower can be seen behind the east front.
