White's artistic work revolves around the notion of reclaiming the act of dissent through the production of cultural objects. His research is situated at the intersection of several fields in the social space including, politics, human rights and post-colonialism. His practice is centered around concepts of design and its history as a form of social and political expression." - Robert Maconachie

The artwork below highlights the political depth of Anthony White’s practice, combining urgent contemporary themes. As part of a larger series called ‘89 Seconds to Midnight’, created as part of a solo show in Singapore, White created several landscape pieces responding to the escalating global risks of environmental and nuclear catastrophe.

The title references the Doomsday Clock, which has been set to 89 seconds to midnight—the closest it has ever been - symbolizing an unprecedented level of global peril’ - Anthony White emphasises the significance of this series in highlighting the urgent need for greater global environmental awareness.

One of White’s most acclaimed bodies of work drawing from the Eureka Stockade uprising is called Manifestation series, created following his 2020 Creative Fellowship at the National Library of Australia. Anthony White conducted extensive archival research into Sidney Nolan’s personal papers and first-hand accounts of the Stockade, as well as studying Nolan's iconic mural created in 1966.

Inspired by the legacy of the 1854 Eureka Rebellion, which later resulted in universal male suffrage amongst other historical reforms in Australia, Anthony White undertook four weeks of deep research to produce an informed series of politically significant art. Through his research at the Australian National University, White discovered Sidney Nolan’s work, which offered a fresh perspective on the 1854 Rebellion. Nolan’s mural reveals a strong anti-colonial stance and highlights the often-overlooked diversity of those involved in the uprising in Australia.

Currently we are seeing the increasing relevance of civil disobedience in movements such as the Yellow Vests in France, and groups like Extinction Rebellion, protesting for climate change, increasing class inequalities, or retirement ages. In my mind there is no doubt that the power of democracy is diminishing internationally, and I feel we need to voice our discontent with government policies that infringe on personal liberty, especially the right to protest peacefully.” - In a period marked by heightened civil disobedience, White’s underscores the essential role of democracy and the ongoing fight for international liberty, civil rights, and peace.

Titled ‘After Eureka: The Studies for Manifestation, White's recent exhibition at the Eureka Centre, Ballarat, in 2024–2025, marked the 170th anniversary of the uprising. The works themselves reinterpret dissent: the painterly gestures become a form of protest, echoing Nolan’s visual storytelling but recontextualised through White’s contemporary lens.
