Image description

Street scenes from Murillo’s native Seville were very popular with foreign collectors. This is possibly one of the earliest paintings by the Spanish artist to enter an English collection. When this painting had to be sold in 1765, William Blathwayt acquired a copy for Dyrham. However, William’s brother bought the original and it returned to Dyrham, eventually hanging opposite its replica, which a later member of the family claimed was by local Bath artist, Gainsborough.
