The sinuous lines in this painting echo the tangled vines and foliage that Brice Marden encountered in his travels to the Maya temple Uxmal in Yucatán, Mexico. Marden used a palette knife to apply paint while using solvents to remove certain elements of the painting. Ghost images of the erased lines remain within the skeins (web?) of pale blue and green that rest atop a warm grey ground. The undulating lines, combined with the muted colour scheme, produce a constant but calming motion.
