Image description

Most were presented to Baron Baud, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in 1834. The Java War (1825-1830) between the Dutch and the Java princes, cost the lives of 200,000 Javanese and 15,000 Dutchmen. Because unrest remained in parts of Java, Baud went on an inspection tour in 1834 when he received weapons, traditional symbols of power, from local rulers as a token of their (extorted) loyalty to the Dutch government.
