Artist's view of the European satellite INTEGRAL in orbit around the Earth, 2002 (photo)
Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)
Umnak Island - Aleutian Islands - Alaska - Umnak Island - Aleutian Islands - Alaska: Umnak Island is one of the Fox Islands, belonging to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, USA. With an area of more than 1,776 km, it is the third largest of the Aleutian Islands. At the top right is the Okmok caldera (erupted in 2008), below the Vsevidof volcano; below the left, the Ile des Quatre Montagnes. Image obtained on 3 May 2014 by the Landsat-8 satellite. On May 3, 2014, the Landsat 8 satellite acquired this natural-color image of Umnak Island and its volcanic neighbors in the Aleutian Island chain. Part of the Fox Islands, Umnak is the third largest in the Aleutian chain and lies just southwest of Unalaska. Umnak is mostly unpopulated, with roughly 40 people living in the village of Nikolski near the southwest tip of the island. Being a volcanic island, Umnak has numerous mud pots, hot springs, and the only geysers in Alaska. The landscape is dominated by volcanoes. On the northern half of the island, Okmok - site of the 2008 eruption - rises 1073 meters (3,520 feet) above sea level as a broad shield volcano with a caldera nestled near the top. A crater lake sits amidst the volcanic ash and debris in the caldera. Mount Vsevidof, a symmetrical stratovolcano, rises 2149 meters (7,050 feet) and dominates the skyline of the southern portion of Umnak Island. The volcanic Islands of the Four Mountains are also visible in the lower left of the wide image
Bayan Obo Mine - China - Bayan Obo Mine - China: Bayan Obo is a mining town in Mongolia. It is the world's largest rare earth mining mine. Image taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on October 6, 2009. The Bayan Obo mine is a large niobium mine located in northern China in Inner Mongolia. The vast majority of rare earth-96 percent of the market - come from China. About half come from Bayan Obo. Astronaut photograph was acquired on October 6, 2009 from the International Space Station (ISS)

Grasberg Mine - Indonesia - Grasberg Mine - Indonesia: The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the Indonesian province of Papua in western New Guinea, a few kilometres west of Puncak Jaya, Oceania's highest peak. It is thus located at about 4,000 m above sea level. It consists of an open pit mine and an underground mine. Image taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on 25 June 2005. Located in the Sudirman Mountains of the Irian Jaya province of Indonesia, the Grasberg complex (also known as the Freeport Mine) is one of the largest gold and copper mining operations in the world. This astronaut photograph illustrates the approximately 4-kilometre-wide open-pit portion of the mine complex; there are also extensive underground mine workings. Access roads for trucks hauling ore and waste rock are visible along the sides of the pit. The mine is located in close proximity to rare equatorial mountain glaciers that serve as indicators of climate change in the region. Removal of vegetation, steepening of slopes related to mining activities, earthquakes, and frequent heavy rainfall have resulted in deadly landslides in the mine workings. While landscape reclamation projects have begun at the mine, environmental groups and local citizens are concerned with the potential for copper contamination and acid rock drainage into surrounding river systems, land surfaces, and groundwater. Astronaut photograph was acquired on June 25, 2005 from the International Space Station (ISS)
Carajas Mine - Brazil - Carajas Mine - Brazil - Carajas Mine is an open-air iron mine located in the state of Para in Brazil. It's the largest open-air iron mine in the world. There are iron reserves here for a century, but also gold, copper, manganese View obtained from the International Space Station (ISS) on 26 July 2015. The Carajas Mine is the largest iron ore mine in the world. It is located in the municipality of Parauapebas, state of Para in the Carajas Mountains of Northern Brazil. The mine is operated as an open-pit mine, and is estimated to contain roughly 7.2 billion tons of iron ore, plus gold, manganese, bauxite, copper, and nickel. Seen from the international space station on July 26 2015
Tongatapu satellite view - Tongatapu seen from space: Tongatapu Island (Kingdom of Tonga) observed by Sentinel-2A satellite on 23 May 2016 - The island of Tongatapu and the nearby smaller islands - all part of the Kingdom of Tonga archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean - are pictured in this Sentinel-2A image from 23 May 2016 - Tonga's population is spread across 36 of Tonga's 169 islands, but about 70% live on this main island. The capital, Nuku alofa, sits on the island's north coast and along the Fanga'uta Lagoon. The lagoon's mangroves provide an important breeding ground for fish and birds
Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island (Shikotan) is one of the largest islands of the Kuril archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean between the Kamchatka Peninsula and northern Japan. In this image obtained by the EO-1 satellite on 14 February 2011, this volcanic island is surrounded by ice forming spirals in the wind. Ostrov Shikotan (or Shikotan - to) is a volcanic island at the southern end of the Kuril chain. Shikotan lies along the extreme southern edge of winter sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite captured this natural - color image of Shikotan on February 14, 2011. The island is surrounded by sea ice - - swirling shapes of ghostly blue - gray. The ice in this image may have formed in a matter of several days, and it is prone to moving with currents. North of the western end of Shikotan, eddies have shaped the ice into rough circles. The eddies may result from opposing winds - - winds from the north pushing the ice southward, and winds from the southwest pushing the ice towards the northeast. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the island is seismically active
Tempete Xynthia above France seen by satellite - Storm Xynthia above France seen by satellite - The Xynthia tempete seen by Aqua satellite on 27 February 2010. An extratropical cyclone named Xynthia brought hurricane - force winds and high waves to Western Europe. Winds as fast as 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour reached as far inland as Paris, and at the storm's peak, hurricane - force winds extended from Portugal to the Netherlands. Hundreds of people had to take refuge from rising waters on their rooftops. By March 1, at least 58 people had died, some of them struck by falling trees. Most of the deaths occurred in France, but the storm also caused casualties in England, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of Western Europe, acquired in two separate overpasses on February 27, 2010. MODIS captured the eastern half of the image around 10:50 UTC, and the western half about 12:30 UTC. Forming a giant comma shape, clouds stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to northern Italy

Volcanic ash cloud in Iceland - Volcanic ash cloud from Iceland - The volcanic ash plume caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjoell volcano (Eyjafjallajoekull) in Iceland seen by the Envisat satellite on 11 May 2010. A heavy plume of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano is visible travelling over the Atlantic in this Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer image acquired on 11 May 2010. The narrow shape of the ash cloud indicates a lot of wind is blowing in a southerly direction towards the west of Ireland. Also visible, the area around the Hakla volcano (east of Eyjafjallajoekull) now appears black as the snow and ice that surrounded it in April have been completely covered by ash. The volcano has been emitting steam and ash since its recent eruptions began on 20 March
North pole by satellite - September 9, 2008 - Arctic sea ice - September 9, 2008 - Arctic ice coverage September 9, 2008. Image based on data obtained by the Aqua satellite. This image shows the sea ice that occurred on September 9, 2008. Sea ice is frozen seawater floating on the surface of the ocean. Some sea ice is semi-permanent, persisting from year to year, and some is seasonal, melting and refreezing from season to season. The sea ice cover reaches its minimum extent at the end of each summer and the remaining ice is called the perennial ice cover. Image made from Aqua satellite instrument

Detroit d'Ormuz - 02/2011 - Strait of Hormuz - 02/2011 - Detroit d'Ormuz seen by Envisat satellite on February 4, 2011. The south - eastern parts of Iran (top) and the Arabian Peninsula are featured in this image, acquired by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on 4 February 2011. The closest point between the two Middle Eastern countries is the Strait of Hormuz (centre), which links the Persian Gulf (left) with the Gulf of Oman (upper right) and the Arabian Sea (lower right). Several countries are visible on the peninsula: the United Arab Emirates (top left), Oman (tip and bottom right) and Saudi Arabia (far left and bottom)
Aral Sea view from 1977 to 2006 - Aral sea 1977 to 2006 - The Aral Sea observed by Landsat satellites from 1977 to 2006. In 30 years, 60% of this lake has disappeared. Left, June 4, 1977, middle, September 17, 1989, right, May 27, 2006. The Aral Sea on June 4, 1977, Sept. 17, 1989, and May 27, 2006. The Aral Sea lies between Uzbekistan (to the south) and Kazakhstan (to the north). Once the fourth largest lake in the world, the Aral Sea is now less than half of its original size. The Aral Sea is a terminal, or endorheic, sea (meaning no water flows out of it). It is fed by the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya Rivers, but Soviet river diversions for irrigation made over 40 years ago have starved the Aral Sea of water. In 2001, the World Bank funded the construction of an 8 - mile dam to separate the North and South Aral, and thus save the smaller and less polluted North Aral Sea. The North Aral has been growing since completion of the Kok - Aral Dam in the summer of 2005. Repairs and updates to the inefficient Soviet - era canals have also played a role in the rejuvenation of the North Aral

Selenga Delta - Mongolia - Russia - The Selenge River delta - The Selenga River delta observed by the Landsat satellite - 5 on 23/08/2010. The Mongolian river flows into Lake Baikal by a delta of 546 km2. The Selenge River delta near the border between Russia and Mongolia. Adjacent to the delta, as the river feeds Lake Baikal, are recently cultivated agricultural fields (noted by the geometric patterns) and lowland shrubs and grasslands. The maze of blue tones identifies the channels as the river covers low lands and swamps. Landsat - 5 image taken on August 23 2010
Hurricanes on Earth - 09/2015 - Storms on Earth - 09/2015: Image of Earth obtained by GOES-15 satellites on September 2, 2015. Four storms are visible; from left to right, typhoon Kilo, tropical storm Ignacio, hurricane Jimena, and tropical depression (fourteen E). The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 15 (GOES-15) captured this image of one typhoon (Kilo), one hurricane (Jimena), one tropical storm (Ignacio), and one tropical depression (Fourteen E) churning simultaneously in the Pacific Ocean at 15:00 Universal Time on September 2, 2015. All of these storms are tropical cyclones at various stages of maturity. Earlier this week, the three stronger storms (Kilo, Jimena, and Ignacio) made history as they paraded across the Pacific Ocean at Category 4 strength. The ongoing El Nino - a complex weather pattern characterized by warm sea surface temperatures in the central and east-central Pacific - is encouraging tropical cyclone development in the Pacific basin even as it inhibits storms in the Atlantic basin
Deforestation in Brazil - 2009 - Deforestation in Brazil - 2009 - View of deforestation in Rondonia, one of the Brazilian states where deforestation is the most intensive. In 1978, deforestation covered 4200 square km of the state, in 1988 about 30,000 square km and in 2003 about 67,000 square km. Image obtained by Terra satellite on 21 August 2009. The Amazon forest appears in green, the areas deforested in light colours. The state of Rondonia in western Brazil is one of the most deforested parts of the Amazon. In the past three decades, clearing and degradation of the state's original 208,000 square kilometers of forest (about 51.4 million acres, an area slightly smaller than the state of Kansas) has been rapid: 4,200 square kilometers cleared by 1978; 30,000 by 1988; and 53,300 by 1998. By 2003, an estimated 67,764 square kilometers of rainforest - - an area larger than the state of West Virginia - - had been cleared. Here is a satellite image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite taken on August 21, 2009. Intact forest is deep green, while cleared areas are tan (bare ground) or light green (crops, pasture, or occasionally, second - growth forest)

South America: Bolivia - deforestation - These images, from Landsats 2, 4, and 7, show the progression of deforestation in Bolivia from 1975 to 2000. This area lies east of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, in an area of tropical dry forest. Since the mid-1980s, the resettlement of people from the Altiplano (the Andean high plains) and a large agricultural development effort (the Tierras Baja project) has lead to this area's deforestation. Soybean production began in earnest in the early 1970s following a substantial increase in the crop's world price. By the late 1980s, soybeans represented the country's most important oilseed crop. In 1988, soybean production amounted to about 150,000 tons. About 1/3 of the soybean harvest was used domestically in the form of soybean meal for the poultry industry. Other soybean meal was shipped to Peru and western Europe, and raw soybeans were exported via rail to Brazil. Locally manufactured soybean oil also competed with contraband products from neighboring countries. Most of Santa Cruz's soybean farmers were members of the well - organized and powerful National Association of Soybean Producers (Asociacion Nacional de Productores de Soya - Anpo). The town in the Southwest is Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Holy Cross of the Mountains), Bolivia. With a population of 904,376, it is the second largest city in Bolivia. Until 1950, mules transported all goods in and out of the city. The pie or radial patterned fields are part of the San Javier resettlement scheme. At the center of each unit is a small community that includes a church, bar/cafe, school, and soccer field - the essentials of life in rural Bolivia. The rectangular, light colored areas are fields of soybeans cultivated for export, mostly funded by foreign loans. The dark strips running through the fields are windbreaks, which are advantageous because the soils in this area are fine and prone to wind erosion
Richat Structure - Mauritania - Richat structure seen from space - Richat structure, geological formation of volcanic origin, in Mauritania, observed from the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2006. The so-called Richat Structure is a geological formation in the Maur Adrar Desert in the African country of Mauritania. Although it resemble an impact crater, the Richat Structure formed when a volcanic dome hardened and gradually eroded, exposing the onion - like layers of rock. Glacier Bay, Alaska - Glacier Bay in Alaska - Glacier Bay from perspective. This image is the result of joint observations made by the Landsat-7 satellite in visible and infrared, combined with elevation radar data obtained by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) in February 2000. At the bottom left of the picture, the Brady Glacier. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve lies on the Pacific Coast of Alaska south of the St. Elias mountain range. The bay was set aside as a National Monument in 1925 and became its current National Park and Preserve in 1980, when approximately 85 percent of the park was designated a Wilderness Area. It has since been recognized as a UN Biosphere Reserve, in 1986, and a World Heritage Site, in 1992. The water in the foreground in the southwest (bottom left) corner of the image is the Gulf of Alaska, with Icy Strait running roughly west to east (horizontally) in from Cape Spencer where the strait meets the Pacific. The foreground glacier is the Brady Glacier. The light gray feature at the foot of the glacier is fine silt dropped by the glacier as it melts. The glacier's meltwater washes the silt into the Strait, coloring the shallow waters light blue as the silt mixes. The long finger of water dominating the entire scene is Glacier Bay itself. The Grand Pacific Glacier now terminates well above Tar Inlet, the finger of water stretching furthermost north (up) at the top of Glacier Bay. The first major inlet on the east (right) coming up from the mouth of Glacier Bay is Muir Inlet. The glaciers feeding into the bay terminated here around 1860. The body of water paralleling the Bay on the eastern edge is Lynn Canal, a body of water also draining into Icy Strait beyond the eastern boundary of the park. This image is a visualization created by merging imagery from the Landsat 7 satellite's Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM +) instrument with elevation data from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED). Onekotan volcanic island seen from space - Onekotan volcanic island seen from space - Onekotan Island is an uninhabited volcanic island north of the Kuril Islands chain (Russia). About 40 kilometres long, this island is home to two stratovolcanoes, on the right (north), the Nemo volcano, on the left (south), the Krenitsyn volcano with the caldera Tao - Rusyr. Image obtained from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 9, 2011. Snow cover highlights the calderas and volcanic cones that form the northern and southern ends of Onekotan Island, part of the Russian Federation in the western Pacific Ocean. Calderas are depressions formed when a volcano empties its magma chamber in an explosive eruption and then the overlaying material collapses into the evacuated space. In this astronaut photograph taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 9, 2011, the northern end of the island (image right) is dominated by the Nemo Peak volcano, which began forming within an older caldera approximately 9,500 years ago. The last recorded eruption at Nemo Peak occurred in the early 18th century. The southern end of the island was formed by the 7.5 kilometer (4.6 mile) wide Tao - Rusyr Caldera. The caldera is filled by Kal'tsevoe Lake and Krenitzyn Peak, a volcano that has only erupted once in recorded history (in 1952). Extending between northeastern Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russian, the Kurils are an island arc located along the Pacific Ring of Fire.””
Jet stream over Canada - Jet stream over Canada - Jet stream over Cape Breton Island, Canada, seen by Space Shuttle Discovery in May 1991. The Northern Hemisphere Jet Stream can be seen crossing Cape Breton Island in the Maritime Provinces of Eastern Canada. The Jet Stream is a narrow zone of high - speed winds typically found at altitudes of 4 to 8 miles (8 - 12 km) above the earth. They result from temperature contrasts between polar and tropical regions. The strongest Jet Stream winds are found in the winter when the contrast between polar and tropical regions is the greatest. Wind speeds can reach 90 to over 180 miles per hour (145 to over 290 km/h) from west to east. During the winter months over the United States and southern Canada, the path taken by the Jet Stream can have a large influence on the weather conditions of this region. Volcano Llullaillaco - Volcano Llullaillaco - Llullaillaco or Llullay - Yacu is an active stratovolcano located in the Andes on the border between Argentina and Chile. This image obtained from the International Space Station on 9 December 2009 shows a vast flow of lava that extends from the volcanic cone. The summit of South America's Llullaillaco Volcano has an elevation of 6,739 meters (22,110 feet) above sea level, making it the highest historically active volcano in the world. The current stratovolcano - - a cone - shaped volcano built from successive layers of thick lava flows and eruption products like ash and rock fragments - - is built on top of an older stratovolcano. This detailed astronaut photograph of Llullaillaco illustrates an interesting volcanic feature known as a coulee (image top right). Coulees are formed from highly viscous, thick lavas that flow onto a steep surface. Image taken on December 9, 2009 from the International space station (ISS)
