Mary Venables Vernon, later Mrs George (Adams) Anson (1739-1843), as a Girl by Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779), inscribed: Mary, Daughter to George V.Vernon Esq. & the Honble. Mary Howard. A full-length portrait of a young girl, seated in a landscape, head inclined slightly to the left gazing at the spectator, wearing a black and white dress with a laced bodice and with a large bow at her breast and also holding together her open sleeves at the elbow. She is holding a wreath of flowers in her left hand, whilst leaning with her right hand on the ledge on which she is seated. There is a basket of flowers beside her on the ledge to the left. A distant horizon can be seen on the right. Daughter of George Venables Vernon, 1st Lord Vernon, and the Hon. Mary Howard. Born in 1739, she married George Adams of Orgreave in 1763, George took the name Anson in 1773 on inherting the Shugborough Esate in Staffordshire. Badly damaged at bottom left, cracking, varnish discoloured Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire
