Dame Harriet Jane Backhouse Findlay (1880-1954); Lady Harriet Findlay was invested as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1929 and was styled as Dame Harriet Findlay. Her husband, Sir John Findlay was an enlightened and progressive newespaper proprietor with a high ideal of the moral responsibility of the Press to the public. Public service; National Galleries of Scotland etc; Lady Findlay ably supported her husband in his public work and was herself Chairman of the Scottish Unionist Association two years ago, the first woman to hold that office.
