The shepherd girl in this beautifully detailed watercolour is holding a bunch of lilac blossoms. This suggests that the month is May, when lilac blooms in the south of England. Myles Birket Foster's brightly coloured scenes of country children were extremely popular with Victorian audiences. His technique of dots and tiny brushstrokes of colour may have been influenced by his early career as an engraver. He specialised in watercolours from around 1860. In 1863 he settled in Surrey, where this scene is set;
