Image description

Teresia or Teresa or Elizabeth, born Sampsonia Khan (1589-1668) was a Saafavid Iranian noblewoman, daughter of Ishamael or Ismail Kahn, and later the wife of noted Elizabethan English adventurer Robert Shirley or Sherley. She was born into an Orthodox Christian Circassian noble family. She married Sir Robert Shirley (1581-1628) in 1607. He was an envoy of Shah Abbas the Great of Persia to several European countries. and the paintings of the Shirleys were done in Rome. Numerous sketches of the couple appear in Van Dyck’s Italian Sketchbooks. Colourful oriental dress; Van Dyck was influenced by Titian and the other great Venetian colourists. Paintings first recorded at Petworth in 1775.
