Description
On his way to Italy, Wilhelm Bendz stopped for one year in Munich, where he produced many works, like this small painting of vaulted rooms leading to the courtyard of an inn. A man with his back to us stands on the threshold of the second room and gazes at something outside the picture frame, forcing the viewer to imagine the world beyond the painting. This pictorial device is typical of German Romanticism.
