Classical Landscape (w/c on paper)

George Barret painted many idealised landscapes in watercolour. This style of landscape painting was intended to recreate a classical Italian scene. The ancient temple in this picture, and the golden glow over the landscape, reflect this influence. The popularity of this style with collectors was due to the importance given to Greek and Latin literature in young gentlemen's education. George Barret was a London artist.
