Image description

Panama Canal. Working and living in areas of swamp with poor housing and insufficient food, the men had little chance of remaining well. But the most fatal scourges, malaria and yellow fever, from which many collapsed, were passed to them from a mosquito's bite. Inset shows John F Stevens who brought some sanity to the Panama project. Original artwork for illustration on p15 of Look and Learn issue no 934 (15 December 1979).
