Image description

Forbes was attracted to street scenes throughout his career, and he often observed the quiet activities of the local population in situ. Chateaudun is one of a handful of paintings collected by Arthur and Helen Grogan to complement their watercolour collection. A contemporary critic described Forbes as being 'penetrated with the actuality of life, he sees no visions, and he dreams no dreams; but on the other hand he sees with extraordinary clearness and simplicity, and renders with extraordinary clearness what he sees'. Norman Garstin in his article on Stanhope Forbes in The Studio, 1901. (Words from The Whitworth Collection Page)
