Created at the Omega Workshops Ltd.: a design enterprise founded by members of the Bloomsbury Group and established in July 1913 (until 1919), located at 33 Fitzroy Square in London. This saturated blue glaze echoes the intense glazes of Chinese ceramics from the Song dynasty that Fry favoured. Technically, this tureen shows Fry’s progress as a potter thanks to the guidance he received at the ceramics workshop of Carter & Co in Dorset. It is well thrown, with the handles cut out of slabs of clay. The heavy-duty tureen contrasts with the delicacy of the knob, perhaps in the form of a bison.
