The Cause of Eclipses and the Motion of the Earth Delineated', 1748. Print of a scene of London overlain with three diagrams in the sky explaining the forthcoming solar eclipse. Titled 'The Cause of Eclipses and the Motion of the Earth', the engraving by Joseph Walker was published for the Universal Magazine in 1748. The print was intended to inform Londoners of the causes and appearance of a solar eclipse that would be visible from the capital on the 14 July 1748 on the Julian calendar (25 July on the modern Gregorian calendar). The eclipse was total in northern Scotland but only partial in London as is indicated on the left-hand diagram of the print. ©SSPL/Science Museum
