Parnall electric washing machine and mangle, 1955. Model EW50/H. Until the early 1950s, electrically-driven washing machines had to have pre-heated water. Later models, such as this one made by Parnall-Radiation (Yate) of Bristol, were fitted with electric heaters so that water was brought to the required temperature in the machine. The heat switch was then set to a lower temperature for the washing process. Waste water was removed from the tub by a lever-controlled electrical pump. The front switch controls the 'dolly' rotation; the left one controls the mangle. ©SSPL/Science Museum
