February 2024 Anniversaries
February 1st: Honours 80 years since the death of Dutch abstract artist, Piet Mondrian. Celebrated for his paintings of simple geometric shapes painted in red, blue, yellow and black, Mondrian was an important member of the De Stijl movement.
February 3rd: A century since the death of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States.
February 3rd: Celebrates 150 years since the birth of Gertrude Stein, American novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector.
February 8th: 25 years since the death of Dame Iris Murdoch, Irish born British writer and philosopher.

February 10th: A decade since the death of American actress, singer and diplomat, Shirley Temple. Best known as Hollywood's leading child star in the 1930s. She later served as US ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.
February 21st: The 90th birthday of Nina Simone - American singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist. Her music spans genres including, classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, R&B and pop.

May 12th: 80 years since the death of Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, British writer, poet and literary critic. Quiller-Couch was perhaps best known for The Oxford Book of English Verse.

May 28th: Marks 175 years since the tragic death of British novelist and poet (and the youngest member of the Bronte family), Anne Bronte, who passed away at age 29 to Tuberculosis. Bronte was perhaps best known for her novels, Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

August 2024 Anniversaries
August 3rd: 20th anniversary of the death of French humanist photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson, who is considered a master of spontaneous photography and one of the first users of 35mm film. He was a pioneer of street photography and saw the medium as the capture of a decisive moment. Cartier-Bresson was one of the founding members of Magnum Photos in 1947.
August 13th: Celebrates English auteur filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock’s 125th birthday. Today, he is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema.

September 30th: Centenary birthday of American novelist, screenwriter, playwright, actor, and socialite Truman Capote. Capote is attributed with the invention of the creative non-fiction genre with his novel, In Cold Blood.
October 2024 Anniversaries
October 1st: 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday. Carter is the longest-lived President in US history.

October 9th: Honours Nicolas Roerich’s 150th birthday - Russian artist and stage set and costume designer. Roerich famously worked with the Ballet Russes.

November 9th: The fall of the Berlin Wall; on this day in 1989, East Germany opened its checkpoints, allowing its citizens to travel to West Germany. This pivotal historic moment marked the fall of the Iron Curtain, one in a series of events that initiated the collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe.
