Image description

The book stall against the Butler property on Chestnut Street was a harbinger of the encroachment of commerce upon private residences, as Philadelphia business moved steadily westward from the old city in the 1850s. Pierce Butler was a resident of Philadelphia from the 1780s to his death in 1822. Between 1789 and 1804 he was a senator to Congress from South Carolina, where he also owned property. The mansion shown here was demolished in 1859."
