Image description

A wealthy Scottish family, the Mackays, prepare to depart for New Zealand; artistic licence but the Mackay family went on to become highly successful in New Zealand. They settled at Nelson Haven (later Port of Nelson) and named their house ‘Drumduan’ after their supposed family estate in Scotland. James Mackay Senior became involved in politics and represented Nelson city in the first parliament (1855).
