A Global Collection: 90 Years

 

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is one of the largest museums in the United States, boasting an extensive collection of over 65,000 pieces from around the globe, over 2,300 of which are available to license through the Bridgeman archive.

2014 marks the 90th anniversary of the The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which first opened its grand doors to the public in 1924. With a collection of art and artifacts originating from six continents, the museum is highly acclaimed as one of the most diverse collections in the country, and is renowned for their collections of French Impressionism, American photography, European decorative arts and much more.

As a result of its encyclopedic collection, the Museum is in the top ten most visited in the US.

Gifted Treasures

 

The museum was regularly gifted works of art from local benefactors, such as Ima Hogg, since its grand opening in 1924, expanding its grounds multiple times to house world renowned collections such as The John A. and Audrey Jones Beck Collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, and The Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens.

Highlights of these collections include Self-Portrait with Angelica and Portrait of Rachel by Charles Willson Peale, Self-Portrait by Any Warhol, and Bracelet by Peter Chang.
