January 1st: 50th anniversary of the death of Maurice Chevalier, French actor and singer.
January 5th: 100th anniversary of the death of Sir Ernest Shackleton, Antarctic explorer.
January 6th: 200th birthday of the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. Schliemann (6 January 1822 – 26 December 1890) was a German businessman and a pioneer of field archaeology. He was an advocate of the historical reality of places mentioned in the works of Homer.
January 8th: 80 years since the birth of Steven Hawking in 1942, British theoretical physicist and cosmologist. Author of A Brief History of Time. He suffered from motor neurone disease for over 50 years and communicated from his wheelchair via a speech synthesizer. (Died 2018.)
January 8th: 75 years since the birth of David Bowie, in 1947. British pop/glam rock singer, songwriter and actor. One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. (Died 2016.)
January 15th: 400th birthday of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, alias Molière, French actor, theater director and playwright.
January 17th; 80 years since the birth of Muhammad Ali (previously Cassius Clay), American heavyweight boxing champion. One of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century.
January 30th: 50 years since The Troubles in Northern Ireland: Bloody Sunday. British paratroopers opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in Londonderry, killing 13 people (plus another who died later) and injuring many others.
February 6th: 70 years since the death of George VI, King of the United Kingdom (1936–52). Succeeded by his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.
February 11th: 10th anniversary of the death of Whitney Houston, American singer and film actress. One of the best-selling musicians of all time.
February 27th: American actress Elizabeth Taylor's 90th birthday.
March 7th: 150th birthday of the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.
March 16th: 200th birthday of the French animal painter Marie Rosalie Bonheur (Rosa Bonheur).
May 25th: 80 years since the birth of Aretha Franklin, ‘the Queen of Soul’, American soul/R&B/pop/gospel singer. Known for her many hit songs including Respect and I Say A Little Prayer. (Died 2018.)
May 6th: 30th anniversary of the death of actress Marlene Dietrich.
May 17th: 10th anniversary of the death of Donna Summer, "disco queen", American singer, songwriter and actress.
May 29th: 40th anniversary of the death of Romy Schneider, German-French film actress of Austrian descent.
June 21st: 40th birthday of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, second in line to the British throne. Son of Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales.
June 25th: 25th anniversary of the death of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, French oceanographer and filmmaker.
June 26th: 100th anniversary of the death of Albert I, Prince of Monaco (1889-1922), he was succeeded by his son, Ludwig (Louis) II.
July 5th: 60 years ago, on this date Algeria gained independence from France.
August 4th: 60th anniversary of the death of American actress and glamour icon Marilyn Monroe.
August 7th: 155th birthday of Emil Nolde, one of the first expressionists and member of Die Brücke
August 12th: 30 years since the death of John Cage, American avant-garde composer.
August 25th: 10 years since the death of Neil Armstrong, American astronaut (Apollo 11). The first person to walk on the the moon.
August 29th: 40th anniversary of the death of Ingrid Bergman, Swedish film actress (Casablanca, For Whom the Hour Tears, Lady Alquist's House, I Fight For You, Notorious and many others)
August 31st: 25th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, her partner Dodi Al-Fayed and her driver in a car accident in the Place de l'Alma underpass in Paris, France.
September 5th: 25th anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, nun and missionary. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
September 14th: 40th anniversary of the death of Princess Gracia Patricia von Monaco, formerly the American film and television actress Grace Kelly.
September 27th: 200 years ago the French orientalist Jean-François Champollion announced that he had succeeded in deciphering the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs on the Rosetta Stone.
October 13th: 200th anniversary of the death of Antonio Canova, Italian neoclassical sculptor famous for his marble sculptures.
October 18th: 100 years since the BBC was officially founded as the British Broadcasting Company (now the British Broadcasting Corporation).
October 21st: 600th anniversary of the death of Charles VI, the much-loved or the 'mad' King of France (1380-1422). He was succeeded by his son Charles VII.
October 27th: 90 years since the birth of Sylvia Plath, American poet and novelist. (Died 1963)
November 4th: 100 years ago the British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. On November 26th, he reached a second sealed door and discovered the famous treasures.
November 18th: 100th anniversary of the death of Marcel Proust, French novelist, best known for his 7-volume novel In Search of Lost Time.
November 29th: 90 years since the birth of Jacques Chirac, president of France (1995 - 2007). (Died 2019).
December 8th: 100th birthday of Lucian Freud, a British figurative artist and draftsman born in Germany. One of the leading portrait artists of the 20th century (he died in 2011).
December 20th: 100th birthday of Tony Vaccaro, American photographer.
December 27th: 200th birthday of Louis Pasteur, French biologist, microbiologist and chemist. One of the fathers of the germ theory. He is best known for his discoveries in the field of disease prevention, including the pasteurization process that bears his name.
