Acclaimed British artist Gavin Turk (b 1967) is best known as one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) - a group of artists known for their openness regarding artistic approaches, usage of materials, and a keen eye for shock tactics who began exhibiting together in 1988. The work of the YBAs dominated contemporary British art in the late 80s and 90s.
Throughout Turk's career he has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork and the use of rubbish in art.
''Take two paintings by the same artist - one has a signature and the other doesn't. The signed picture is generally more valuable. The signature is almost graffiti or a tagging system, yet it can become more important than the subject.''
- Gavin Turk
Turk’s installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth’ of the artist and the ‘authorship’ of a work, Turk’s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp.
In Recent Years
Recently, Turk has taken part in several large-scale sculptural commissions and has donated artwork and funding to several charities including his own, The House of Fairy Tales, which was formed with his wife and acts as a national children's arts charity.
Gavin has recently helped produce the Turkish Tulips Folio, which raises money for children's charities - the sales of which he is actively promoting.
