What's your role at Bridgeman Images?
I work in the Picture Research department on the new material that comes into us from collections and suppliers. I select the images that best fit a client's brief.
What do you love most about your job?
I get to look at pictures all day! I love working with such an enormous variety of images. One week I can be researching photographs of soldiers in World War One from the National Army Museum. The next I'll be looking at ancient Roman frescoes.
What misconceptions do people most commonly have about the archive?
People often think we only have fine art. In reality Bridgeman Images also has an enormous range of photography, new and old, as well as travel photography from around the world.
Katie's top picks from our archive
South Wind, Clear Dawn
Japanese art is my absolute favourite. I'm desperate to go to Japan to see the landscapes that inspired work like this. Our incredible number of Japanese prints are among my favourite things to catalogue. I find this painting of Mount Fuji by Hokusai incredibly calming.
Eiffel Tower, Paris
I love how Andre Kertesz plays with shadow and different angles to offer a new and beautiful perspective on everyday life. The Eiffel Tower is such a heavily photographed subject, yet this photograph feels completely fresh and new.
A Skulk of Foxes
Rebecca Campbell is a contemporary artist I've come across through working at Bridgeman Images. I love her playful paintings of animals and the way she creates patterns in her work. This is my favourite of hers, with the flashes of red as the foxes dash across the picture.
New York fruit peddlers
I love footage that takes you back to a moment in time. This early Thomas Edison clip does just that. It's so amazing that we can be transported back to the streets of New York in 1903 to get a glimpse of daily life.
Proem
I remember being blown away by Cy Twombly's work at MoMA on a trip to New York and have been a fan ever since. I love the sense of freedom in his work, and the way he uses colour and line to convey emotion.
