Harry Wilson was one of a group of coalminers in Ashington, Northumberland, who began painting at evening classes in 1934. Their pictures recorded the life of the mining community. This picture has an unusual dreamlike quality. Smoke coils from the pit chimney on far left of the painting. On the right of the picture, two miners float along in the sky on the smoke towards the fair. This picture was owned by Robert Lyon, the Newcastle University teacher who taught the Ashington miners;
