During the Second World War, the community of Schwanden above Brienz set up a common soup kitchen as a means of saving money. A soup cook cooks about one hundred litres of soup every day. The offer is taken up by a large part of the Schwandener population, by poor as well as rich. At noon, the school children line up with their cauldrons to pick up soup for their families. This not only saves the families money, but also the time for cooking, which is very convenient for the housewives.
