Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (b. 1599 d. 1660), Knight of the Order of Santiago, was an eminent Spanish artist and painter. He was the leading artist of the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, as well as a prominent artist of the Spanish Golden Age and the Baroque period. His individualistic work featured an intricate tenebrist style. Though he later developed a more liberal style distinguished by bold brushstrokes. His work was highly cultural significant, particularly his portraits of the Spanish royal family.
