Image description

This textile banner features St. Martin, a Christian soldier in the Roman army based in 4th century Gaul, who divided his cloak with a sword in order to share it with a beggar. He went on to become Bishop of Tours in AD372. The fabric was probably part of a church processional banner, or attached to a processional cross. It may have been used by the Worshipful Company of Drapers in London.
