Bridgeman Images was proud to be appointed by the Lucian Freud Archive (LFA) to administer and license the copyright and reproduction rights in Lucian Freud's artwork. As the copyright administrator for the LFA, Bridgeman Images are now delighted to announce the much anticipated biography of Lucian Freud by William Feaver, published by Bloomsbury publishing. The Lives of Lucian Freud: Youth 1922 - 1968 is the first of a two-volume biography that details Freud’s life over a 46 year period.

For the publication, Bridgeman Images licensed works held in the Lucian Freud Archive, the John Deakin Archive and photography by John Riddy. The book includes several reproductions of paintings and photographs that reveal Freud’s accumulation of friends and family over his lifetime.
The LFA (set up by the artist and his representatives before his death in 2011) has also placed its extensive archive of photography of the artist's work with Bridgeman for licensing. This contains exceptional quality high resolution digital photography taken in recent years to produce a complete record of the artist's work.

The biography is the result of Feaver’s abundant telephone conversations with Freud during their 30 year friendship.The style of Feaver’s biography mirrors the lifestyle of the artist himself who lived spontaneously and rapidly. The events recounted lack a controlled narrative, reflecting the impulsive episodicism that contributed to Freud’s infamy. The book is remarkable for both its subject and stylistic form.

Feaver’s biography is not an examination of Freud’s life, and the reader is left to form their own opinions. The artist himself had little interest in introspection, and that notion informs his biography. Given the subject, Feaver’s work is unique and dynamic and has received top reviews.
