Description

Locomotive at sea! Due to a landslide, the very direct Lecce-Milan is diverted between Ortona and Tollo station. The heavy locomotive with the tender went overboard, breaking away from the rest of the convoy. The train drivers, Osvaldo De Fanis and Leonardo Brenda, threw themselves into the water and swimming tried to reach the rocks. Two sailors traveling on the same train, jumped to their rescue, facing the fury of the waves. At Brenda, who was injured in the jump, a surgeon, present among the passengers, amputated a foot by means of luck. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 11 March 1956.
