Image description

Swiss School. Oil painting on canvas, Called Sir Rowland Winn, 4th Bt (1706 - 1765) but probably a Member of the d'Hervart Family, Swiss School, A half-length portrait of a man, in a painted octagon, wearing a green coat, white shirt and red cloak. Though this painting is traditionally called 'Sir Rowland Winn, 4th Baronet', it would be surprising if the 4th Baronet and his wife, Susannah (née Henshaw), were ever painted by a Swiss artist, such as Huber, to whom this portrait was formerly attributed. The 4th Baronet travelled to Germany and Switzerland as a young man on the Grand Tour, but there is no record that he ever visited with his wife. In 1761, he travelled to Vevey in Switzerland to inspect his eldest son's bride, Sabine, but by then both Huber and Susannah had died. The sitter is probably a member of the Hervart family. Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire (Accredited Museum)
