Switzerland Leonhard Ragaz, 1938 (b/w photo)

Portrait of Professor Dr. Leonhard Ragaz, taken in August 1938. Ragaz was born in Graubuenden and attended the cantonal school in Chur. He then studied Reformed Theology at the University of Basel. From there he became a professor at the University of Zurich. In order to live among the working-class population, he resigned from this office and moved to Zurich Aussersihl. In his works and in his life, Ragaz tried to perform the balancing act between religion and socialism. He is thus regarded as a founding father of the Religioes-Social Movement of Switzerland and as a spiritual forerunner of liberation theology.
