Image description

The Regent's Canal was designed by architect and canal engineer James Morgan (1774-1856) and was probably Morgan’s most significant work. Regent's Canal, opened on 1 August 1820, is 8.6 miles (13.8 km) long, and provides a link from the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal to the Limehouse Basin and the River Thames in London. The City [Road] Basin, close to the eastern end of Islington Tunnel, made a huge contribution to the prosperity of the Regent’s Canal Company and was soon acting as a distribution centre for goods into London. Several firms which had become established at Paddington moved to City Road Basin, including the carriers Pickfords. In 1929 the Regent's Canal Company purchased the Grand Junction and Warwick Canals, merging the three waterways to create the Grand Union Canal Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1793-1864) was a British topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings. Shepherd's work, mostly topographical, is characterized by an attention to detail, along with lifelike scenes that contained people, carriages and horses. Engraved by Frederick James Havell (1801-1840/1) and published 26 January 1828 by Jones & Co. 3 Acton Place, Kingsland Road, London. Published in Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the Nineteenth Century by the architect and civil engineer James Elmes (1782-1862). Dedicated to Sir Culling Smith, Baronet (1768-1829), a Christian campaigner for religious freedom and for Protestant causes.
