US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863. 'Marsh Battery' or 'Swamp Angel', was built on 20 foot pilings sunk through the sand, to support a 16,500 pound Parrott gun, that shelled the city of Charleston. Between August 22 and August 23, the Swamp Angel fired on Charleston 36 times. Because it required so much powder to propel projectiles 4.5 miles to the city, the gun burst on the 36th firing.
