Image description

Creator: John Russell Framed pastel drawing of 'Mrs William Pierre-Pont' (according to the frame label) though the usual spelling in standard sources is 'Pierrepont'. The portrait is a pair with that of her husband, Rear-Admiral William Pierrepont, see PAJ2899. Maria Salter was second daughter of Captain Elliott Salter RN. She married Captain William Pierrepont at St Paul's, Covent Garden, London, on 28 March 1797 and had five children, all born at their father's estate, Farley Hill (later Unsted) near Godalming. All were alive at his death death in 1813, but only the eldest, Anne Sumner (b. 1802) and the youngest, Henry Bennett (b. 1812) reached adulthood. Anne married John Uniacke (later mayor of Chester in 1839 and 1840) at St Swithin's, Walcot, Bath, in June 1823: she died at Clifton, Bristol, in 1862. William, born 3 May 1803, died in 1819 at Queen's Square, Bath, aged 15. Charles was born in 1806 and Maria, the second daughter in 1809: both the last died at Farley Hill on 27 April and 29 June 1814, respectively, and are recorded on their father's monument at Godalming.
