Image description

This is one of many watercolour views of the countryside around Durham painted by George Fennel Robson. Robson spent his early life in Durham, and continued to visit his home area after settling in London at the age of about seventeen. His watercolours often showed landscape views bathed in very bright sunlight, and were painted in a slightly stylised manner. This picture was reproduced in a group of engravings published as 'Picturesque Views of English Cities' in 1828. Prints of landscape views were very popular at this time.
