Image description

after Raphael (Urbino 1483 – Rome 1520).. Oil painting on canvas, The Triumph of Galatea (after Raphael), a 17th century copy after the fresco in the Villa Farnesina, Rome by Raphael (Urbino 1483 – Rome 1520), once thought to be by Domenichino when first acquired. Galatea stands in her shell with a water-wheel paddle, in the centre, holding the reins of two dolphin. Above are cupids or amoretti shooting arrows. On the left a satyr holds a nymph and behind a Triton blows a conch shell. On the right another Triton blows a pipe and behind him is a winged sea-centaur carrying another nymph or Nereid on his back. Saltram, Devon (Accredited Museum)
