Dod (Doris) Procter spent a large part of her career as part of the artists' colony at Newlyn in Cornwall. The girl in this picture may be Cissie Barnes, the teenaged daughter of a Newlyn fish merchant. Her turning pose and the white scarf on her head create smoothly sculptural forms. Her raised arm helps fill as much of the picture space as possible. Simple square and circular shapes make up the background. Only small areas of red and yellow are allowed to vary the cool colours;
