"The Sea! The Sea!" The heroic way in which ten thousand Greek soldiers, left leaderless in the heart of the Medo-Persian Empire, made their way to the coast and so home, is graphically told by the historian Xenophon, to whose vigour and decision their success was largely due. He gives us a moving description of their first distant view of the sea, which, although still fifty miles away, greatly stimulated their hopes of a safe return.
