By C. Tayleur & Co, Vulcan Foundry The Vulcan Foundry opened in 1832, as Charles Tayleur and Company to produce girders for bridges, switches, crossings and other ironwork following the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The Vulcan 2-2-2 locomotive was the first to run on the Great Western Railway when it was tested on 28 December 1837 from its shed at West Drayton. Three Vulcans were produced, numbers 51-53, of which this is No. 51.
