First London-Aldermaston march, London, April 1958. Lunch stop - and a rockn roll session near the Albert Memorial. Aldermaston in Berkshire became a nuclear base in 1950. Following a demonstration held there during Easter 1956, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), was launched by the philosopher Bertrand Russell and Canon John Collins. Protesters marched from London to Aldermaston in 1958, and there were annual marches from Aldermaston to London from 1959-1963. Aldermaston is the headquarters of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) where Trident submarine-launched nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles are made. Aldermaston has close links with nuclear weapons laboratories in the United States. CND still campaigns against the base's activities. ©SSPL/Manchester Daily Express
