On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Part of Durie Lane, from east end of Fairy Ground. The old pubs on left with projecting entrance to one. Old names forgotten. Was told by old inhabitants some years back that they were known as Bellshaw's and Elliot's; and I found in the 1880 Directory that these two families at that period lived in 6 Queens Place, a cul-de-sac off the Parade next to Davidson's old house with steps up like many of the lawyers offices in Athol St. Steps at rt.angles to the house frontage so that information has no reference to a time at least 50 years, probably double that, anterior when these were inns of a sort, as was practically every house in the old town.
