Video description

A film entitled 'Jubilee' showing celebration activities held on fields adjoining The Green Man public house in Herongate, Essex, on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935. To the original silent, black and white film has been added a sound narration spoken by Steffie Hope as the voice of Mrs Nash, apparently Herongate's oldest resident at the time and who appears on the film. The film begins with a photograph of The Elms, Herongate - the home of Mrs Nash. We see various group shots and then a shot of Mrs Nash talking with Reginald Houlston, the Vicar of All Saints, East Horndon with St. Andrew, Herongate. Then schoolchildren parading past the camera. There is a group shot of all the ladies in the village (some of whom are holding babies). There are then a number of close-up shots. The following people, seen on the film, are named: Miss Wantner, Mrs Houlston (the vicar's wife), Mrs Bacon, Mrs Chrissie Frost, Mrs Fortis, Mrs Makin, Mrs Agnes Trembling, Mrs Gladys Trembling, Mrs Richardson, Mrs Sadler, Mrs Pratt, Doris Pratt (and her son), Michael Wood, Michael and Arthur Sadler, Arthur Richardson, Anne Trembling, Peggy Hodge (of Fouchers Farm), Mrs Gladys Sadler, Mrs Dickinson, "my cousin Evelyn", Ruby Dorrington, Nicky Tyler, Mr 'Pickle' Cross, George Sach, Joe Richardson, Walter Cross, Jack Payne, Jim Trembling, Fred Trembling, Wally Cross, and Mr Reed (owner of a cafe near The Green Man). We then see a series of children's running races, followed in each case by close-up shots of the winners. Under 5's race: John Reeman, Vincent Winchett. Boys' under 8's race: Len Boone, Gordon Wymark, Ken Reeman. Girls' under 8's race: Peggy Hodge, Betty Winchett, Myrtle Gibson. There is then a wheelbarrow race and shots of a number of children, including Eileen Reeman, Ethel Makin, Winnie Wilson, Phyllis Sadler, Joan Cross and 'the boy Hodge'. A typed note accompanying the film reads: "The original of this film was taken in Herongate Village in 1935 by D.W. Davis, then an employee of Ilford Limited at Brentwood, using Ilford 16mm neg-pos film stock. In about 1977 the 16mm print was found to have deteriorated severely. Acting for the Herongate and Ingrave Preservation Society, D.M. Neale, then in the Engineering Department of Ilford Limited at Warley, copied the pictures onto Super 8 film and added a soundtrack identifying a large proportion of those appearing. A few months after the 1935 films were taken, the central figure of 'Jubilee', Mrs Nash, died aged 92. The three photographs used in the Super 8 version date from 1935 or shortly after."
