Description

The explorers of the sun. Two astronomers, the Frenchman Audoin Dollfuss from Paris and the Englishman Blackwell from Cambridge, flew off with a stratospheric balloon from a terrace of the Meudon Observatory. At a height of over 6000 meters, they took a series of photos of the sun and launched the special optical instruments, secured by parachutes, that they had on board into the void. Five hours after their departure, the two scientists were touching the ground about sixty kilometers from Paris. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 9 December 1956.
