North American Wild Flowers reproduced the delicate colour effects of Mary Vaux Walcott’s 400 original watercolors through a special photoengraving technique that printer William E. Rudge called the “Smithsonian Process.” The process was aptly named, as not only was the book published by the Smithsonian Institution, but Mrs. Walcott was the wife of Charles Doolittle Walcott, the fourth Secretary of the Smithsonian.
